Near salt-water pools, close to seawater, or in a corrosive environment, we recommend hot dipped galvanizing (HDG) for corrosion protection. This method is widely used in outdoor construction projects and will provide long-term corrosion protection. HDG immerses the completed panels in molten zinc and may result in a textured finish. Alternatively for a more cost effective option aluminium can be used. Though a slightly weaker material, it costs much less than HDG.
For most environments we use Pre-Gal (PG) for corrosion protection. Pre-gal has a smooth finish and costs less than HDG. The zinc finish is applied to the steel during the rolling process. The zinccoated steel is then welded into the finished panels using corrosion resistant welding material.

Coastal and salt-exposed fencing generally requires greater attention to cleaning and maintenance to help protect its finish.
Aluminium does not rust in the same way as steel, although it can still be affected by corrosion and environmental exposure.
We commonly recommend considering hot-dip galvanising for steel fencing in more corrosive environments, including locations exposed to salt.
Hot-dip galvanising involves coating fabricated steel with zinc to provide corrosion protection.
The appropriate corrosion protection depends on the material and environment. Areas close to pools, the coast or other corrosive environments can require additional consideration.
